The importance of being prepared at all times cannot be overstated. Life often presents opportunities when we least expect them, and our level of preparedness can determine whether we rise to the occasion or miss out entirely. This principle became very real for me during a recent experience at Devfest Yenagoa, an exciting tech event I attended. The event was buzzing with innovation, ideas, and inspiring individuals from all corners of the tech community. Though I initially attended as a guest, a surprising turn of events tested just how ready I truly was.
Despite arriving late, I was unexpectedly invited to join the panel of Women in Tech speakers. It was a spontaneous moment, and one that could have easily gone south if I hadn’t done the necessary groundwork in advance. As I walked up to the stage, a whirlwind of thoughts ran through my mind; what if I hadn’t been actively investing in myself all this time? What if I had neglected to sharpen my communication skills, deepen my understanding of tech trends, or cultivate the confidence needed to speak publicly? That split-second decision to step up made me realize that preparation isn’t just about technical know-how; it’s about building the whole package.
Thankfully, I had put in the effort over the years. From attending workshops to staying updated on industry developments, from mentoring others to continuously pushing myself beyond my comfort zone; every bit of it paid off. That preparation enabled me to speak with confidence, share meaningful insights, and connect with an audience eager to learn and grow. I was able to offer both technical knowledge and personal experiences as a woman navigating the often challenging, but rewarding, path in the tech space. It reminded me that readiness is built long before the spotlight ever finds you.
The panel discussion itself turned out to be a truly fulfilling experience. I not only shared but also learned; from fellow speakers, audience questions, and other sessions throughout the event. There were rich conversations around artificial intelligence, innovation, and inclusion, and I found myself engaging in activities that stretched my thinking and broadened my perspective. More than just a speaking opportunity, it became a moment of mutual growth and inspiration, and I was grateful to be part of it.
Looking back, the experience at Devfest Yenagoa reaffirmed a valuable life lesson: always stay ready. Preparation isn’t just about anticipating a specific moment; it’s about building capacity, so that when the unexpected knocks, you can answer with confidence. Whether it’s in tech or any other field, we never know when our moment to shine will come. But when it does, being equipped: mentally, emotionally, and professionally can make all the difference. So keep learning, keep growing, and stay ready. Your next big moment might be just around the corner.
